Following is the preamble to the Town of Huntsville’s charter, adopted June 29, 1965:


BE IT KNOWN, the Town of Huntsville, Scott County, Tennessee, being
as follows:

“BEGINNING in the north right of way of Tennessee Highway No. 63 where the property lines of Helen Sharp and Hughett intersect in said right of way, same being east of Huntsville, Tennessee. When, northwardly and perpendicular to the north right of way 1,000 feet to a stake; thence, westwardly and parallel to said highway crossing the Huntsville to Paint Rock road, continuing same course to the intersection of the east bank of Flat Creek at a point 1,000 feet north of said highway right of way; thence, southwardly along the east bank of Flat Creek across State Highway No. 63 and continuing southwardly along the east bank of said creek to the base of the cliff line that forms the falls in said creek just south of Tennessee Highway No. 63; thence, southeastwardly along the various meanderings of the cliff base to the junction with Cain Creek continuing with the same base line to the most southern point of the ridge that forms the breastworks or Forst Clift; thence, east to the county road which leads from Huntsville to Nathaniel Byrge’s residence continuing east to the crest of the ridge southeast of Shelby Strunk property. Then, along the extreme crest of the ridge to the south property line of William F. York, thence, a direct line northwardly crossing the old Huntsville to Jacksboro road to the southern point of a conditional line between J. W. Baker and L. G. Stonecipher; thence, along said conditional line to the northwest corner of the Stonecipher property; thence a direct line northeastwardly to the black gum corner near the location of the old rock quarry, a corner of the J. W. Baker property, then, a direct line to the BEGINNING.”

“The above area to be divided into two wards designated as Ward No. 1 and Ward No. 2. All of the above area lying north and east of a line formed by the road running from Breastworks Hill to the Town of Huntsville, thence along the east side of the Courthouse Square to State Highway 63, thence west along Highway 63 to the Flat Creek Bridge shall constitute Ward No. 1. All of the area lying south and west of said line shall constitute Ward No. 2.” is hereby duly and legally incorporated, and, as such, is entitled to all the benefits and subject to all the responsibilities of the laws of the State applicable to municipal corporations, incorporated under the Mayor Aldermen form of Government as provided by Sections 6-110 & 6-111 of the Tennessee Code Annotated.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereto affixed my signature and the Great Seal of the State, at Nashville, this 29th day of June in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred 65.
